Murderhobo approach: Figure out what the combat stats are. Find/buy/steal gear that improves combat stats. Go after killable enemies - in this case, bandits, wolves, and shades, and some giant tree things called kettem. Get the valuable loot from those, and go after more enemies.
Ignore most of the explore-and-trade options that involve remembering where all the resources are and who wants which ones; get high-value loot from killing enemies, beef up your combat skills, and sell any non-combat items you pick up at the nearest town.
I think eventually they'll realize there's not much to the game if that's what you do, and they are doing some of the quests as well. But the rest of the game is "slowly trek back and forth across the map looking for specific items or ingredients, and then go looking for the person who wants them."
